Richard Strauss had Mozart's woodwind writing very much in mind when, in the 1940's, he focused his attention on these instruments. In this composition, and in others like it, Strauss captured the pristine qualities of Mozart's airy textures and achieved a youthful lyricism that belied his eighty-one years.
