CH71 Lounge Chair

The masterfully designed CH71 Lounge Chair is perfectly proportioned to be both elegantly compact and supremely comfortable. With its slender frame and flowing sculptural form, the CH71 Lounge Chair is a testament to the legendary Danish designer’s unique understanding of woodworking and upholstery. Created in 1952, the design shows all the hallmarks of the ‘Master of the Chair’, including a seamless unity of form and function, and a refined aesthetic that has remained effortlessly contemporary throughout the passing decades. As well as being a highly skilled cabinetmaker, The designer also gave great consideration to the chair’s proportions, resulting in a streamlined piece that can add style and softness to even the smallest of spaces. With an array of textiles to choose from, the chair can be upholstered in a variety of colors and textures, while the legs and handles are available in oak and walnut with various finishes.

CH71 was designed by Hans Wegner. Wegner is arguably the most important figure in Danish modern furniture design. Early in his life, Wegner apprenticed under a cabinetmaker and was eventually educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1938, he worked on furniture for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller's Aarhus City Hall. By 1943, he opened his own design studio, where he would design some of his most famous works. The peacock chair was designed in 1947 for Johannes Hansen and thanks to innovations from designers such as Eames and Aalto, bent plywood shell chairs by Wegner began in 1948. Both the Wishbone and Round Chair were in introduced in 1949 and have since become two of his best recognized works. Over his career, Wegner designed over 500 different chairs and countless other pieces including tables and cabinets. The attention to joinery, craft, and material have helped to make his name so revered.
